I have been seeing Dr. Bob for about a year now. Prior to him I had tried many different doctors to help with my “life after thyroidectomy” issues. Going to him was the best thing I could have ever done. He was patient and really listened. Seeing him has really improved my way of life. I would definitely recommend him if you want to stay away from pharmaceuticals and have the proper bloodwork done. He truly cares for your well being and works hard for his patients.

Sustainable Results

Functional Medicine aims to provide long-lasting results by addressing the root cause of your health concerns.

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine’s purpose is to implement a personalized method of medicine that revolves around a root cause treatment plan in contrast to managing symptoms. Rather than addressing the surface-level ailments, it seeks to target the question “Why are you ill?”

Functional medicine practitioners will inquire about your daily life to take note of possible contributing factors to your illness such as; sleep, exercise, nutrition, stress, and environment.

By taking these factors into consideration our functional medicine practitioner, Melanie Hughes, will help you take charge of your health using a holistic approach that includes nutrition and lifestyle modifications, as well as supplements when appropriate.

Treatments in Functional Medicine

Functional medicine treatments are not particularly directed in a specific way but depend on the patient’s unique needs. Unlike prescriptive conventional care, functional medicine treatments are patient-centric and meant for overall well-being. The treatment tries to seek an answer for the deep-rooted causes of the illness and overall does effective chronic disease management.

Mental Health

In most cases, mainstream medicine practices often ignore the psychological aspect for further health prospects. Often mainstream medicine fails to completely wipe out chronic illness. Particularly, prolonged irregularities like IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome need more mental counseling than heavy consumption of medications or following a strict lifestyle would have worked.

Connecting Unrelated Symptoms

symptoms

What makes FM more inclusive than any other existing clinical treatment is its ability to connect unexpected symptoms. The practitioners of FM believe that even minor signs like migraines or drowsiness can hint toward some severe illness. So, it links up minor symptoms with the major observable ones and accordingly consults with the patient to opt for the best means.

Dietary Pattern

Back to the basics but often ignored, FM emphasizes proper nutritional care. Instead of suggesting tablets and pills firsthand, the patients are asked to consume healthy dietary foods. So, a diet chart often is prescribed which includes the amount of intake for useful nutrients and minerals, particularly vitamins, potassium, sodium, iron, etc for patients’ well-being.

Therapies

symptoms

Most severe health conditions can’t be recovered unless therapy sessions are actively pursued. For example, meditation and acupressure techniques are often suggested to release stress and mental disorders including anxiety, hypertension, and other issues.

Tests and Medications

There are common pathological tests and subsequent medications that are also recommended for functional medicine treatments. For example, diabetes, creatinine, and some cardiac assessments are mandatory for FMs too. Even sustaining drugs or medicines that are prescribed for conventional treatments are also considered in this kind of integrative treatment. But clearly, tests and medications are not the only means for well-being according to the best functional medicine doctors in New Jersey.

Another difference is that conventional wisdom separates the body into smaller and smaller parts, without emphasizing the interconnections of those parts. For example, the branch of medicine known as cardiology deals with diseases or abnormalities of the heart, neurology deals with the anatomy, function and disorders of the nervous system and endocrinology deals with the hormones in your body.

These systems and disorders are generally addressed separately. There is no greater proof of this than looking at the specialists who take of these issues. For example, if you are diagnosed with problems (or if your primary care physician even suspected problems) with your heart, your nerves or your hormones, chances are that you would be referred to three different specialists.

That would naturally be a cardiologist, a neurologist and an endocrinologist. However, the truth is that your body is one integrated, organized and whole system.Functional medicine breaks apart the artificial division of the human body into separate, disconnected parts; solutions focus on whole body healing.

Functional Medicine Addresses Root Causes

The other main difference is that while conventional medicine may occasionally identify things that contribute to poor health, there isn’t any whole body thinking about the fundamental laws of biology and how to use these principles to address the foundational causes chronic illness and chronic degenerative disease. For example, in conventional wisdom, if you have severe headaches, you will almost certainly be given a drug.

Aspirin, for example. Now, we have all had headaches in our lives. The question is, has the cause of any headache in history ever been the lack of aspirin in the body? Of course, not!

See, if the lack of aspirin in your bloodstream was the cause of headaches, then it would make sense to take the aspirin. But taking the aspirin (or any drug), while absolutely changing your biology and having an effect, doesn’t address the underlying or foundational cause of symptoms, sickness or disease.

So, functional medicine helps us understand how everything works together in the body as one whole system and emphasizes the underlying foundational causes of imbalance and eventual disease.

The Future Of Medicine

functional-m-img-1

In Functional/Foundational Medicine, more and more conventionally (and wholistically) trained doctors who are frustrated with mediocre, often temporary clinical results are asking… ‘Why?’

The promise of Functional and Foundational Medicine is to find answers to that question not only for these dedicated healers and educators, but for their patients as well.

While Conventional Medicine may better be described as ‘sickness, symptom and disease care’, Functional Medicine is truly healthcare where healthcare professionals’ partner with their clients as they recognize the body’s innate ability to heal when deficiencies are addressed, toxicities are corrected and obstructions to optimal healing are removed.

Functional medicine is the future of medicine–available now. It seeks to identify and address the ROOT CAUSES of disease and views the body as one integrated system, not a collection of independent organs divided up by medical specialties.

In summary, functional medicine acknowledges and supports the WHOLE system, not just the individual symptoms.
